ZD420 vs ZD620

Two closely related 4-inch Zebra families. ZD620 is the higher-performance model (faster, more options). ZD420 is an earlier / more entry-level Link-OS 4" desktop series.

Suffix meanings:

T = Thermal Transfer (uses a ribbon roll).
C = Cartridge thermal-transfer model (ZD420 cartridge ribbon system).
D = Direct Thermal (no ribbon).

Compatibility rule of thumb:

Printheads are typically interchangeable across ZD420 and ZD620 provided you match the model family/variant (T vs C vs D) and resolution (203/300 dpi) and use the correct OEM part number. Always confirm part number and dpi before ordering.

More Detail

1) What's different between ZD420 and ZD620 printers (affects printhead choice)

Performance & features: ZD620 has higher top print speeds (ZD620: ~8 ips @203 dpi, 6 ips @300 dpi) and extra features (optional color LCD, battery option, more advanced sensors/options); ZD420 tops out lower (ZD420: ~6 ips @203 dpi). That means the platform and firmware differ a bit, but the physical printhead assembly used by both families is often the same part for the same dpi/variant.

2) What the suffixes mean (ZD420T, ZD420C, ZD420D, ZD620T, ZD620D)

ZD420T / ZD620T (T = Thermal Transfer) - these models use a conventional ribbon roll and have a thermal-transfer printhead assembly. Replacement printheads for these are sold as specific part numbers

ZD420C (C = Cartridge) - ZD420 cartridge model uses Zebra's ribbon cartridge; some part numbers are specific to the cartridge variant. The cartridge models differ in how the ribbon drive/transport sits in the top cover, so a replacement printhead should match the cartridge variant if listed.

ZD420D / ZD620D (D = Direct Thermal) - no ribbon. Direct-thermal models use printheads intended for direct thermal printing; replacement printheads for D models have their own part numbers

Part Number And Compatibility

Part Number Of ZD420 series and ZD620 series

ZD420/ZD620/ZD420T/ZD620T 203dpi: P1080383-226

ZD420/ZD620/ZD420T/ZD620T 300dpi: P1080383-227

ZD420D/ZD620D 203dpi: P1080383-415

ZD420D/ZD620D 300dpi: P1080383-416

ZD420C 203dpi: P1080383-001

ZD420C 300dpi: P1080383-007

Are the printheads compatible with each other?

ZD420 ↔ ZD620 ↔ ZD420T ↔ ZD620T

YES - if the replacement printhead is the correct part number for that variant and dpi. Manufacturers and parts sellers list the same part numbers as compatible for ZD420 and ZD620.

T vs C vs D

Generally not directly interchangeable between variants unless the part page explicitly states compatibility.

  • Example: a printhead listed for ZD420T / ZD620T (thermal-transfer roll models) is intended for printers with the roll ribbon carriage; a ZD420C (cartridge) replacement may have a different part number even if physically similar. Check the part number.
  • DPI must match: you must use a printhead with the same resolution (203, or 300 dpi). A 203 dpi head will not give 300dpi high-resolution output and will not be physically keyed the same.

Practical compatibility table

Your printer Accepts replacement heads listed for:
ZD420 ZD420 / ZD620 / ZD420T / ZD620T replacement heads(matching DPI & part no.)
ZD420T ZD420T / ZD620T replacement heads (matching DPI & part no.)
ZD420C ZD420C replacement heads (cartridge variant). It is different from T heads and D heads.
ZD420D ZD420D / ZD620D replacement heads(matching DPI & part no.)

Recommendations

  1. Check your printer's exact model & DPI (ZD420 vs ZD420T vs ZD420C vs ZD420D vs ZD620 vs ZD620T vs ZD620D ; 203/300dpi). The printer label or configuration report will show this.
  2. Match the OEM part number - order the printhead part number listed for your exact variant. Sellers and Zebra parts pages explicitly state compatibility.
  3. If buying a third-party/compatible printhead, confirm the seller explicitly lists compatibility for both the printer model + the DPI + the variant (T/C/D).
